Thinking about applying for Permanent Residency (永住, eijuken) in Japan? The Tsukada Gyoseishoshi Office (a licensed immigration specialist (gyoseishoshi)) in Nagoya supports foreign residents across the Tokai region — Aichi, Gifu, Mie and Shizuoka — from document preparation to submission to the Immigration Bureau.
Who can apply for Permanent Residency?
Permanent Residency is granted based on objective requirements. The main ones are:
- Length of stay — In principle, 10 years of continuous residence in Japan (including 5+ years on a work status). Shorter routes exist: spouses of Japanese nationals or permanent residents (about 3 years of marriage and 1+ year living in Japan), and Highly Skilled Professionals (1–3 years).
- Good conduct — No record of crimes or repeated/serious traffic violations.
- Stable, independent livelihood — Sufficient and stable income or assets to support yourself.
- Public duties — Taxes, pension and health insurance paid correctly and on time. Unpaid or late pension/tax is one of the most common reasons applications are refused.
- Current residence status — Holding the longest period of stay available for your status (3 years is accepted in practice).
- A guarantor — A Japanese national or permanent resident who acts as your guarantor.
Whether you meet these requirements is judged on the documents and evidence you submit. Collecting the right documents and clearly proving each requirement is where professional support makes the difference.
